This is the second sermon on this lectionary text. In it we specifically look at Jesus promise he will build his church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. That's an image of the spread of the church taking over the world. The gates of a city were the weak link during a siege, in the ancient world. Jesus was saying that the kingdom of hell would not be able to resist the onslaught of his kingdom. His kingdom would storm their gates and overtake them. He also tells us how this will happen. It's not, as the hymn says, through swords loud clashing and roll of stirring drums. Instead it happens via the same method that Jesus secures the kingdom with, when he offered himself up self sacrificially. When we take up our cross and follow Jesus, nothing can stop us. The world will be ours.
