Part 1 of 2 on this lectionary text. In this first part, we consider the Jewish messianic expectation that led Peter to in one moment proclaim Jesus as the Christ, and then in the next moment rebuke him for predicting his coming death and resurrection in Jerusalem. Likewise, Jesus gives Peter his name (Peter = Rock) in one moment, and then calls him Satan in the next. Peter knew Jesus was the Messiah, but he didn't have room in his thinking for the idea of a crucified messiah. As Paul would later say, the concept of a crucified messiah was a stumbling block to the Jews.
